Race Estimates


% White Estimate, 2009

Description: Percentage of total population that self-identifies as White alone. The US Census Bureau defines as White a person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East or North Africa, including those who indicate their race as “White” or who respond with entries such as Irish, German, Polish, Italian, Lebanese, Near Easterner or Arab. Persons who identify as mixed race are not counted in this category.

% Black Estimate, 2009

Description: Percentage of total population that self-identifies as Black alone. The US Census Bureau defines as Black or African American a person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa, including those who self-identify their race as “Black, African American, or Negro,” or who provide written responses such as Afro American, Kenyan, Nigerian or Haitian. Persons who identify as mixed race are not counted in this category.

% Native American/Alaskan Native Estimate, 2009

Description: Percent of total population that self-identifies as Native American or Alaskan Native alone. The US Census Bureau defines as Native American or Alaskan Native a person having origins in any of the peoples of North, Central and South America, and who maintain community attachment and tribal affiliation. Persons who identify as mixed race are not counted in this category. The Bureau further defines: American Indian as those who indicate their race as “American Indian,” enter the name of an Indian tribe, or report such entries as Canadian Indian, French American Indian, or Spanish-American Indian. Alaska Native as those who identify themselves as Eskimos, Aleuts, and Alaskan Indians, or with responses such as Artic Slope, Inupiat, Yupik, Alutiig, Egegik and Pribilovian.

% Asian or Pacific Islander Estimate, 2009

Description: Percentage of total population that self-identifies as Asian or Pacific Islander alone. The US Census Bureau defines as Asian or Pacific Islander a person who has origins in any of the peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent, including those who self-identify themselves Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Thai, or other Asian. Persons who identify as mixed race are not counted in this category.

% Other Estimate, 2009

Description: Percent of total population that self-identifies as something other than the following race categories alone: "White," "Black or African American," "American Indian or Alaskan Native," "Asian," or "Other Pacific Islander." Included in this category are persons who self-identify as multiracial, mixed, interracial, or a Hispanic/Latino group (for example, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban) in the "Some Other Race" category.
